The Chronicler wrote that before campaign against Jebus - Jerusalem, David said:כל-מכה יבוסי בראשונה יהיה לראש ולשר; ויעל בראשונה יואב בן-צרויה,“Whosoever smites the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain. And Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first” (1 Ch 11:6).In the account about this battle that appears in the Book of Samuel, we hear David saying:כל-מכה יבסי ויגע בצנור“Whosoever smites a Jebusite, and gets up to the gutter” (2 Sam 5:8). It is not clear how the English translator determined that the unique word בצנור (batsinor) means: “to the gutter” nor is this understanding supported by the Greek translator. The fact that the word בצנור (batsinor) is not mentioned by the Chronicler, while the writer of the Book of Samuel does not mention here Joab the son of Zeruiah, suggests that בצנור (batsinor) is a misspelled בן-צרויה (ben-tseruiah). If this suggestion is correct that we have here a compounded error where the order of the letters ן-צרו (n-tseru) was reversed to צנור (tsnor) and the last two letters יה (iah) were erroneously deleted.
